August 26, 2010 – DePuy, a Johnson & Johnson company, recalled its ASR hip replacement device due to a high failure rate. DePuy has also warned doctors that the DePuy ASR device could fail.  Some ASR patients have experienced a painful failure of the device within a couple of years after the implant. Apparently, ASR patients could experience symptoms  including swelling, pain from  walking and device loosening.  Furthermore, the metal-on-metal constructioncauses friction resulting in metallic particles being released into patients bodies. These metallicparticles result in elevated metals in the blood which could be harmful.
