BARD COMPOSIX KUGEL MESH PATCH RECALLED
March, 2006 -The Food and Drug Administration ordered an immediate Class I Medical Device Recall for the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch. This recall was necessary to prevent the likelihood of potentially catastrophic failure of this device.   In 2005 the FDA announced a warning that the device could be defective. A Class I Medical Device Recall is the most serious recall the FDA can make. The Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch was recalled because it has a reasonable probability to cause serious adverse health consequences, including death.The Kugel mesh patch was developed and used for hernia repairs. Thousands of people have had hernia repair surgeries with the Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch implanted in them. The Kugel patch is inserted through a small incision.  The “memory recoil ring” allows the patch to be folded and inserted through the small incision opening. The memory recoil ring allows the Kugel patch to spring open and lay flat once in the correct position.

The main failure with the Kugel mesh patch may occur when the recoil ring breaks and exposed sharp edges cause bowel perforations. These  bowel perforations may lead to chronic intestinal fistulae. Furthermore, the Kugel patch may also fold over and attach to patients bowels. Symptoms may include a large bulge at previous surgery site, severe abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting. Bard Composix Kugel Mesh Patch device failures have caused some patients to undergo surgeries to remove the patch.  These procedures can be painful and expensive.
